"My friends work colleague has just come back from Vietnam and he told my friend that I shouldn't carry a handbag as guys on bikes mug women. I also went online and a lot of people have said the same.....Did you carry a handbag or backpack, what would you suggest? Thanks again"
My response - "I read in the guide books about the bag snatching although I never saw or heard of this happening to anyone I met. I have a female friend who went around Vietnam on her own and never had any trouble. The worst place for it is Nha Trang apparently but I never went there. I took either a handbag (but it's one that goes across the body) or a daypack with both straps on my shoulders but never felt unsafe or at risk anywhere. If you go to the Cu Chi tunnels and plan on going inside the tunnels just be aware that there is no room in there for a bag. I took a bag with only a bit of money in and nothing of any value, just took my camera in my hand as you have to leave the bag with the guide or another traveller if they are too scared to go in. You will be fine."
"Also, is it better to use Dong or US Dollars or a bit of both??!"
My response - "Definitely dong, much cheaper. Get it at airport, about 33000 = £1."
"Glad you have me the heads up on Hue we've now cut it down to 1.5 days so we can spend more time in Hoi An. The internal flight I found was about £40 with Vietnam Air who seem to have good reviews, so fingers crossed.
The travel website link you sent is the one I found really helpful and have saved this for when we've booked our flights next week so we can get more definitive plans in place before we get there!
Thanks so much again for all your advice it has been massively helpful!!!"
